Welcome To The Nee Law Firm Blog!

Hello and welcome to the Nee Law Firm blog. The blog is a new feature here on the website, and the plan – for now anyway – is to post new entries twice a month.
Let me begin by introducing myself. My name is Kevin Diehl, and I will be writing the Nee Law Firm blog. Matt Nee – the firm’s managing attorney – asked me to handle the writing duties for his website because I have experience at this sort of thing. For the past twenty-plus years I worked as a “ghostwriter” for Justice Paul E. Pfeifer. If that name sounds familiar it’s because Justice Pfeifer served twenty-four years on the Supreme Court of Ohio. He retired at the end of 2016. During his four terms on the bench, Justice Pfeifer and I worked together to produce a weekly newspaper column that was made available to all the media outlets – newspapers, radio and television stations – throughout Ohio.
The purpose behind the column was to help tell the story about the work that was carried out at the Supreme Court. The Court didn’t often garner much attention in the press, and Justice Pfeifer wanted to do what he could to change that because he recognized that the cases we ruled on had the potential to impact the lives of millions of Ohioans.

In the course of my time with Justice Pfeifer we collaborated on more than 1,000 columns. Typically, I wrote about the cases that we had handled. And we handled a vast array of cases – from death penalty appeals and constitutional issues such as illegal searches, free speech and speedy trials, to child custody battles, leaky basements and dog bites. We reviewed issues as far-reaching as the method of funding schools in Ohio to disputes as specific as the property line running between neighbors’ yards.

It was our goal to explain the complex legal issues, to decipher the “legalese” and to make the work of the Court more accessible to folks who weren’t in the legal profession.

But we didn’t always stick to just legal issues. If you take a look at the column archive on the Supreme Court’s website, you’ll see that on many occasions we ventured into other realms – science, technology, medicine, history and personal stories about both the famous and the not-so-well-known.

Matt had followed my work for nearly two decades, and that’s why he asked me to write for his law firm. Blogging will be a new experience for me. I’ll be stepping out from behind the curtain and writing in my own voice, rather than speaking with the anonymity that goes with being a ghostwriter. When I was writing for Justice Pfeifer, I tried to make each column informative and enjoyable to read. I’ll be bringing that same commitment to the Nee Law Firm blog.
